{"id":11055,"date":"2016-05-03T20:00:48","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T01:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=11055"},"modified":"2016-05-02T15:47:57","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T20:47:57","slug":"television-watched-early-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/11055","title":{"rendered":"Television watched early 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Master of None<\/em> season 1 (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We watched this in mourning for <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/10737\">the end of <em>Parks &#038; Recreation<\/em><\/a>, and it&#8217;s fantastic &#8211; a very successful comedy-drama mix with hot issues (most notably racism and immigrant-parent stories) mixed into its relationship drama.  I love how there&#8217;s an ensemble cast but each episode gets to tell its own story without roping in superfluous characters just because their actors are listed in the opening titles.  Aziz, returning from <em>Parks &#038; Rec<\/em> and the great <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/4787\">Human Giant<\/a><\/em> is a struggling actor, having been cast in (and cut from) an awful-looking movie called <em>The Sickening<\/em>.  His on-again girlfriend is SNL&#8217;s No\u00ebl Wells and his friends are the giant Eric Wareheim and Lena Waithe (a writer on <em>Bones<\/em> and producer of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9538\">Dear White People<\/a><\/em>) and Kelvin Yu (<em>Bob&#8217;s Burgers<\/em> writer, in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/1395\">Milk<\/a><\/em> and <em>Cloverfield<\/em>), with appearances by usual suspects Todd Barry and Jon Benjamin.<\/p>\n<p>Great editing and music, widescreen cinematography &#8211; TV comedy is reaching new levels.  Eric and Aziz directed episodes, along with Lynn Shelton (<em>Laggies<\/em>, <em>Humpday<\/em>) and James Ponsoldt (<em>The Spectacular Now<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Rick and Morty<\/em> season 2 (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not as revelatory as the first season, but just as high quality.<\/p>\n<p>Featuring Key &#038; Peele as testicle monsters, Jemaine Clement as a psychic cloud-being named Fart, Christina Hendricks and Patton Oswalt as hive-minds, Matt Walsh as Beth&#8217;s new bisexual husband Sleepy Gary, Stephen Colbert as a Rick-like scientist inside the car-battery microverse, half the <em>Mr. Show<\/em> cast in minor roles, and Dan Harmon as Ice-T.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/rickmorty203.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/rickmorty201.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/rickmorty202.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/rickmorty204.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Veep<\/em> season 3 (2014)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In which Selina is running for president, Amy and Dan compete to be her campaign manager, and Jonah bounces between campaigns while running a DC insider blog.  Also in the presidential race are defense secretary Isiah Whitlock Jr., senator(?) Randall Park, MLB coach Glenn Wrage, and some normal-looking white guy who I forget who he is (Paul Fitzgerald).  Unbelievable ending, as Veep&#8217;s losing on the campaign trail, but becomes President anyway after her boss steps down.
