Koehler called it &#8220;possibly his greatest film, in which McLaren discovered the effect of not drawing on every single frame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren01.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>J-P Coursodon:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One may briefly notice (provided one doesn&#8217;t blink) a flurry of feathers, a parachute, a bird cage, a pineapple, an umbrella that turns into a hen-like figure, as well as many undescribable doodles that keep bouncing all over the screen.  &#8220;This is not a film you see,&#8221; wrote French critic Andr\u00e9 Martin in 1955, &#8220;it&#8217;s a film you think you see.&#8221;  You do hear, however, and not just think you hear, Maurice Blackburn&#8217;s dodecaphonistic score &#8230; with strikingly percussive synthetic-sound punctuations added throughout like so many punches by McLaren&#8217;s scratchings on the soundtrack.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>C&#8217;est L&#8217;aviron<\/em> (1944)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gentle boat ride in sync with a vocal French tune, constant 3D zoom forwards (and sometimes backwards) over sea, through clouds and towns.  There&#8217;s a behind-the-scenes film explaining how it was made, <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren02.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren03.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Spheres<\/em> (1969)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mathematical dance of stop-motion spheres against a morphing cosmic backdrop.  Codirected with Ren\u00e9 Jodoin in 1946, with music added two decades later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren04.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Love on the Wing<\/em> (1939)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A post office advert &#8211; see also the <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/10745\">Len Lye shorts<\/a> &#8211; in which two postal letters are in love.  Fast-paced, surrealist-inspired etched animation, characters constantly morphing into different figures.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren05.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>La Poulette Grise<\/em> (1947)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Variations of chicken\/egg paintings, contorting slowly to a vocal song by Anna Malenfant (doesn&#8217;t that mean Anna Badchild?).  At the end, the chicken sails away upon a crescent moon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren06.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren07.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>A Little Phantasy on a Nineteenth Century Painting<\/em> (1946)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chalky animation upon a reproduction of an Arnold B\u00f6cklin painting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren08.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>L\u00c3\u00a0-Haut Sur Ces Montagnes<\/em> (1946)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another generative painting, a nice pastoral scene<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image16\/mclaren09.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Book Bargain<\/em> (1937)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Short doc with voiceover showing the process of printing the London phone book.
