Then hooded cultists appear outside and they discover a portal to hell in the basement, and things get interesting.  The pre-credits scene has rural folks setting a dude on fire, and we&#8217;ve been at the hospital only six minutes before a possessed nurse murders a patient, so there&#8217;s not much time for setup &#8211; I&#8217;d barely get a handle on any particular character before they&#8217;d be killed in some horrible way.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image17\/void1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>As Filipe Furtado said more eloquently <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/filipe_furtado\/film\/the-void-2016\/\">on Letterboxd<\/a>, Stuart Gordon it ain&#8217;t, but Lovecraftian horror and blatant <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9422\">Hellraiser<\/a><\/em> ripoffs (as opposed to bland official <em>Hellraiser<\/em> <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/67\">sequels<\/a>) are always welcome.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image17\/void2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The codirectors have done art and effects for Guillermo del Toro films and are buddies with the guys who made <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11101\">The Editor<\/a><\/em>.  Our cast includes Art Hindle (<em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11273\">The Brood<\/a><\/em>), the BBC interviewer from <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3556\">Pontypool<\/a><\/em>, at least two people from <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/4577\">Survival of the Dead<\/a><\/em>, and Knives Chau from <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/4897\">Scott Pilgrim<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cop brings injured dude to near-abandoned rural hospital, bringing to mind that Southbound episode from last year&#8217;s SHOCKtober, or Attack on Hospital 13.
