Murnau)<\/strong><br \/>\nVery good live band at the Alamo.  I&#8217;m noticing that film\/concert experiences are topping this list.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11964\">The Passion of Joan of Arc<\/a><\/em> (1928, Carl Theodor Dreyer)<\/strong><br \/>\nFilmstreams&#8230; with live music<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3331\">Suspiria<\/a><\/em> (1977, Dario Argento)<\/strong><br \/>\nFully restored with delirious color on a huge screen with a sold-out crowd.<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11726\">Yi Yi<\/a><\/em> (2000, Edward Yang)<\/strong><br \/>\n7. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12164\">The Manchurian Candidate<\/a><\/em> (1962, John Frankenheimer)<\/strong><br \/>\n8. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12254\">Stalker<\/a><\/em> (1979, Andrei Tarkovsky)<\/strong><br \/>\n9. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12325\">Blade Runner<\/a><\/em> (1982, Ridley Scott)<\/strong><br \/>\nAll in their latest HD versions at home, my first time watching them since the VHS days.<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12229\">Spirited Away<\/a><\/em> (2001, Hayao Miyazaki)<\/strong><br \/>\nSomehow I didn&#8217;t recognize this as a masterpiece when I first watched in theaters.<\/p>\n<p>11. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12390\">The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer &#038; Stille Nacht<\/a><\/em> (1984-93, Brothers Quay)<\/strong><br \/>\nSuch tactile little films, HD makes a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>12. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/501\">Duelle<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/540\">Noroit<\/a><\/em> (1976, Jacques Rivette)<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;d seen these not so long ago, but they&#8217;re awesome.<\/p>\n<p>13. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12166\">Kill Bill<\/a><\/em> (2003-04, Quentin Tarantino)<\/strong><br \/>\nAlso rewatched <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/257\">Grindhouse<\/a><\/em> and most of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3021\">Basterds<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>14. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11655\">The Love Witch<\/a><\/em> (2016, Anna Biller)<\/strong><br \/>\nAt first look I wasn&#8217;t sure what to make of it, then I read Sicinski&#8217;s article a couple times and watched again as soon as it hit blu-ray &#8211; it&#8217;s incredible.<\/p>\n<p>15. <strong><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/102\">Idiocracy<\/a><\/em> (2006, Mike Judge)<\/strong><br \/>\nJust seemed like a particularly good year to give this another look.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
