{"id":13036,"date":"2019-03-06T23:00:06","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T04:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=13036"},"modified":"2019-03-06T22:49:18","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T03:49:18","slug":"bertrand-mandico-shorts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/13036","title":{"rendered":"Bertrand Mandico shorts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UFO called <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12879\">The Wild Boys<\/a><\/em> made my <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12950\">top-ten list<\/a> of 2018, so I tracked down some shorts by the same director to see what he&#8217;s on about.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Any Virgin Left Alive<\/em> (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A rude reimagining of the death of Joan of Arc (Elina L\u00f6wensohn).  Only her eyes are burned, and she roams the battlefields in a metal mask, capturing and tormenting a young woman.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9356\">Amer<\/a><\/em>-reminiscent:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Our Lady of Hormones<\/em> (2014)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two women come across a hairy, fleshy creature with a penile protuberance, squabble over its ownership and care.  L\u00f6wensohn is eventually murdered with a sickle by Nathalie Richard (the great dancer from <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8431\">Up, Down, Fragile<\/a><\/em>).  These shorts have the Argento-Maddin coloring of <em>The Wild Boys<\/em>, and are similarly perverse fun.  Narration by Michel Piccoli (currently his most recent credit), making this the Mandico film with the highest percentage of Rivette actors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico3.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico4.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Living Still Life<\/em> (2012)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A woman finds dead animals and poses them obsessively in stop-motion scenarios, stalked by a grieving man.  Great sound and music and color, a perfect short, docked a couple points since I&#8217;ve recently seen <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12679\">A Zed and Two Noughts<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico5.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico6.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<br \/>\n<strong><em>Ultra Pulpe<\/em> (2018)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am the most hated filmmaker of my generation, the tribal pornographer, the scavenger of the genre.  Who will remember me?&#8221;  Absolute madness involving women and other creatures on a film set.  Pascale Granel shot everything else I&#8217;ve seen by Mandico, now Sylvain Verdet takes over&#8230; I don&#8217;t know either of them from anything else, just trying to keep up.  L\u00f6wensohn and Richard are joined by Lola Cr\u00e9ton (<em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9196\">Bastards<\/a><\/em>), two of the Wild Boys, and (as actors) the costume designer of <em>Knife+Heart<\/em> and Michael Haneke&#8217;s casting director.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico7.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico8.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/mandico9.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A UFO called The Wild Boys made my top-ten list of 2018, so I tracked down some shorts by the same director to see what he&#8217;s on about. &#8211; Any Virgin Left Alive (2015) A rude reimagining of the death of Joan of Arc (Elina L\u00f6wensohn).
