{"id":13185,"date":"2019-10-19T20:00:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-20T00:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=13185"},"modified":"2019-10-19T18:33:16","modified_gmt":"2019-10-19T22:33:16","slug":"knife-heart-2018-yann-gonzalez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/13185","title":{"rendered":"Knife + Heart (2018, Yann Gonzalez)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In late 1970&#8217;s Paris, Anne, the boss of a porn film company (pop star Vanessa Paradis) has to deal with being dumped by her editor (<em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9935\">You and the Night<\/a><\/em>&#8216;s Kate Moran) and being investigated for the murder of one of her actors, actually perpetrated by a masked psycho wielding bladed sex toys.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Anne decides to deal with this by filming a porn parody of the investigation called <em>Homocidal<\/em> and casting herself as the murderer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart3.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart4.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>As actors keep dying, she visits a bird museum, discovers the victims are visited by a blind grackle, an extinct bird, and tracks down the story of a tormented youth, burned half to death by his father for being gay, come to the city as a scarred, homocidal adult.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart5.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart6.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Also featuring Nicolas Maury (<em>You and the Night<\/em>, <em>Heartbeat Detector<\/em>) as Anne&#8217;s blonde director, and Yann&#8217;s fellow-traveler gender-bending filmmaker <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/13036\">Bertrand Mandico<\/a> as the dramatic, floppy-haired cameraman.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart7.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image19\/knifeheart8.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>With the giallo lighting, M83 music, movie theaters and rare birds, this was mostly up my alley.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Sicinski on letterboxd:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If there&#8217;s one dominant hetero influence at work in <em>Knife+Heart<\/em>, it&#8217;s Brian De Palma. This is a sexualized murder mystery, based in part on who has the power of the gaze, who has been sidelined by desire, and how killing is a perverse sexual substitute.
