Charlotte is writing the more popular <em>Jane Eyre<\/em> while Emily is writing the critical fave <em>Wuthering Heights<\/em>, but we don&#8217;t see much of this, mostly we follow their fascination with their boringly strict minister-father&#8217;s bland employee (Paul Henreid, Bergman&#8217;s husband in <em>Casablanca<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Oldest Charlotte is Olivia de Havilland in long tight curls (same year she played twin sisters in <em>The Dark Mirror<\/em>), Emily is Ida Lupino (just a few years before she&#8217;d start <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11827\">directing<\/a>), and their drunkard painter brother Branwell is Arthur Kennedy (whom we recognized from the <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/12680\">westerns<\/a>).  There&#8217;s also the youngest sister (Anne: Nancy Coleman) and mostly we amused ourselves by trying to tell the three girls apart.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bran paints his sisters:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image20\/devotion1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Part of a flurry of Bront\u00eb interest, after the 1939 <em>Wuthering Heights<\/em>, 1943 <em>Jane Eyre<\/em> (with Joan Fontaine, sister of de Havilland), and (purportedly based on <em>Jane Eyre<\/em>) <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/4499\">I Walked With a Zombie<\/a><\/em>.  Mostly a stodgy, joyless costume drama from Warner Bros and Bernhardt (Joan Crawford&#8217;s <em>Possessed<\/em>), and the writers of <em>Undercurrent<\/em> and <em>National Velvet<\/em> and <em>Above Suspicion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Emily in the sky:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image20\/devotion2.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A more specific title would&#8217;ve been Bronte Sisters In Love.
