{"id":13967,"date":"2021-01-11T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=13967"},"modified":"2021-01-10T16:49:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-10T21:49:09","slug":"millennium-mambo-2001-hou-hsiao-hsien","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/13967","title":{"rendered":"Millennium Mambo (2001, Hou Hsiao-hsien)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The opposite of what I just said about <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/13994\">Undine<\/a><\/em> (&#8220;thought the overall structure of the movie only kinda worked, but moment-to-moment I was quite thrilled to be watching it&#8221;) &#8211; in this case I didn&#8217;t appreciate any particular scene at the time, but ended up thinking it was great.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image20\/mmambo1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Set ten years in the future, telling a story about the past (then-present) year 2001, when raves were still in fashion.  <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/10890\">The Assassin<\/a><\/em> star Shu Qi is Vicky, stuck with her abusive and controlling man Hao-hao (Duan Chun-hao of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/13113\">Long Day&#8217;s Journey Into Night<\/a><\/em>).   She&#8217;s with rich Jack (Hou lifer Jack Kao) for a while, but movie is a cycle &#8211; I like the pulsing music under all the action that sometimes rises and takes over.  Beautifully mobile camera, I dig how it moves from outside to inside Jack&#8217;s place via security cam.
