This preceded Lean&#8217;s <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/14224\">Oliver Twist<\/a><\/em>, which also opens with strikingly-shot whipping-wind outdoor scenes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image21\/greatex1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Beat out <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11807\">The Ghost and Mrs. Muir<\/a><\/em> for a cinematography oscar, pretty impressive.  Standout acting by Bernard Miles (who&#8217;d do a <em>Nicholas Nickleby<\/em> film the next year) as Pip&#8217;s decent brother in law, and Finlay Currie (just off <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/1702\">I Know Where I&#8217;m Going!<\/a><\/em>) as the convict\/benefactor&#8230; I liked Young Pip better than Adult Pip, surprisingly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image21\/greatex2.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mostly I experienced flashbacks of reading this for the first time in one high school&#8217;s English class, or performing it in another high school&#8217;s drama class.
