Jimmy is a serious writer stooping to cover a society wedding with photographer Ruth.  Katharine is marrying some schlub and Cary is her ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, intent on making everything difficult for everyone.  Katharine has important rich parents and a typically movie-precocious younger sister.  K. almost falls for Jimmy at the end, but decides to remarry Cary, leaving Jimmy with Ruth and the schlub to wander off alone.  Exactly the kind of movie they don&#8217;t make anymore (sorry, <em>Intolerable Cruelty<\/em>).  Katy watched with me and was delighted.<\/p>\n<p>George Cukor: <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/371\">My Fair Lady<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/512\">Adam&#8217;s Rib<\/a><\/em>, <em>Bhowani Junction<\/em>, fired from <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/82\">Gone with the Wind<\/a><\/em> the year before.<\/p>\n<p>Katharine Hepburn: after <em><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/603\">Bringing Up Baby<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/6334\">Sylvia Scarlett<\/a><\/em>, before <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/512\">Adam&#8217;s Rib<\/a><\/em>, <em>Summertime<\/em> and <em>The African Queen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cary Grant: after <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/496\">His Girl Friday<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8585\">Only Angels Have Wings<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/515\">The Awful Truth<\/a><\/em>, before <em>Suspicion<\/em>, <em>Notorious<\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/5811\">Arsenic &#038; Old Lace<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>James Stewart: after <em>Shop Around The Corner<\/em> and <em>Mr. Smith<\/em>, before <em>Wonderful Life<\/em>, <em>Northside 777<\/em> and <em>Rope<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Philadelphia Story<\/em>: in the IMDB top 200, won two oscars (screenplay and jimmy stewart), nominated for four more, got beaten by <em>Rebecca<\/em>, John Ford, and Ginger Rogers (also playing a girl from Philadelphia).<\/p>\n<p>Everyone who worked on this movie is dead (Ruth Hussey died last year).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delightful comedy, light and funny.
