If you care about writing and plot, it&#8217;s iffy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Donlevy in conference with the thugs:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image24\/combo3.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Villain Richard Conte looked familiar (I guess from <em>The Blue Gardenia<\/em> or <em>Thieves\u2019 Highway<\/em>), lead cop Cornel Wilde not so much (of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/348\">Shockproof<\/a><\/em>).  Jean Wallace was best known as Wilde&#8217;s wife.  The villain&#8217;s wife-in-hiding is Helen Walker of <em>Nightmare Alley<\/em>.  The villain&#8217;s pathetic hanger-on was Brian Donlevy, who is both <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/10470\">Quatermass<\/a> and McGinty, and thugs Lee Van Cleef and Earl Holliman were both later in <em>Gunfight at the O.K. Corral<\/em>.  The Swedish antiquer played a general in <em>Merrill\u2019s Marauders<\/em>, and Bettini is Ted de Corsia, who must&#8217;ve had a noirish face, appearing in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8070\">The Killing<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/6652\">Lady From Shanghai<\/a><\/em>, and <em>Naked City<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cornel pays a visit to Bettini:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image24\/combo1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Conte shows Jean Wallace his closet:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image24\/combo2.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Handsome noir about a clunky police investigation.
