I did call it one of the best movies I&#8217;ve ever seen, so I&#8217;ll take my word for it.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/151\">The Double Life of Veronique<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; beautiful in a way that doesn&#8217;t even make sense&#8230; will have to see it again and again.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Spaced<\/strong>, season 1 &#8211; good thing I&#8217;m accountable to no one with my end-of-year lists, so I can put a TV series up here among all the movies.  Watched the whole season twice, and I&#8217;d do it again&#8230; hilarious and brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Edvard Munch<\/strong> &#8211; such a powerful movie, it troubled my mind all year.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/162\">Scarlet Street<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; I almost want to lower its ranking to punish Fritz Lang for being so cruel to Edward G. Robinson.  So very dark&#8230; best noir I&#8217;ve seen since <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/6569\">Out of the Past<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>6. F.W. Murnau&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/159\">Faust<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; c&#8217;mon, it&#8217;s Faust.<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/45\">Moolaade<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; best movie on female genital mutilation I&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/52\">Dazed and Confused<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; a good time, a very happy movie.<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/136\">Tokyo Story<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; not as happy, but an emotional trip&#8230; gotta see more Ozu soon.<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/4\">Kageroza<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; glad to see what Seijun Suzuki did during his &#8220;time off&#8221; from filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p>11. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/48\">Touch the Sound<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/165\">The Philadelphia Story<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>13. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/6\">Greed<\/a><\/strong> (The TCM reconstructed version)<\/p>\n<p>14. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/77\">La Strada<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>15. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/76\">Wages of Fear<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>16. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/135\">Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; made the list as soon as the curator fell asleep and the disembodied narrator started whispering so as not to wake him.<\/p>\n<p>17. Jean Renoir&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/147\">The Lower Depths<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/72\">Petulia<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>19. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/167\">Mr. Arkadin<\/a><\/strong> (corinth version) &#8211; Orson Welles in full-on crazy mode&#8230; a bunch of amazing scenes loosely stitched together with a ridiculous (and poorly dubbed) framing device.  Too weird not to love.<\/p>\n<p>20. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/86\">Letter From Siberia<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Honorable mentions to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/8\">The Thief of Bagdad<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/53\">The Newton Boys<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge<\/strong>, the <strong>Judex<\/strong> silent serial, and Fritz Lang&#8217;s <strong>While The City Sleeps<\/strong>, among many others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
