Firstly, it&#8217;s a white western, snowbound like <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/438\">Track of the Cat<\/a><\/em> (and moving around in the snow can go slowly, so you&#8217;ve gotta undercrank your movie a little).  Hero Jean-Louis Trintignant (just before <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/521\">Maud&#8217;s<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/15676\">Conformist<\/a><\/em>) is mute, hence the title.  Then you&#8217;ve got a killer &#8220;Tigrero&#8221; who is always calm and polite, so they cast &#8220;Loco&#8221; Klaus Kinski (the spoken words and subtitles don&#8217;t always agree).  The biggest twist for me is the ending, as the villains (corrupt bounty hunters) kill the sheriff, the hero, his girl, then all the families he was trying to protect.<\/p>\n<p><em>The girl was much later in <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/342\">To Sleep with Anger<\/a>:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/greatsilence1.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>L-R: corrupt Pollicut (a <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11488\">Bay of Blood<\/a>sman), the sheriff of Salvatore Giuliano, jailed Kinski<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/greatsilence2.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/greatsilence3.jpeg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This one&#8217;s your standard sort of mysterious-stranger spaghetti-western with a few twists.
