I was a quarter of the way through this and I paused to check what else the director had made&#8230; <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/16976\">BodiesX3<\/a><\/em> and a Carice van Houten movie&#8230; oh, Carice, I&#8217;ve thought about <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/197\">Black Book<\/a><\/em> every day since it came out, I should be watching that instead&#8230; so I did.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/blackbook1.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>I saw <em>Black Book<\/em> twice in 2007, both times before it &#8220;opened&#8221; (probably playing for one sad week at the Landmark in April), but if we run with its NYC\/festival date of 2006, the first year of the blog, I can still live with <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/184\">that year&#8217;s top ten<\/a> (incl. honorable mentions).  Three of these ten (<em>Scanner<\/em>, <em>Slither<\/em>, <em>Fountain<\/em>) are due a rewatch, some others (<em>Prairie<\/em>, <em>Promise<\/em>, all the HMs) possibly as well, and I&#8217;ll drop everything the moment <em>Princess Raccoon<\/em> (or <em>Pistol Opera<\/em>) gets remastered.<\/p>\n<p>Besides <em>Black Book<\/em>, great 2006 movies I watched in &#8217;07 after the year-end list deadline included <em>Volver<\/em>, <em>The Host<\/em>, <em>Old Joy<\/em>, <em>The Namesake<\/em>, <em>Miami Vice<\/em>, <em>The War Tapes<\/em>, <em>Dry Season<\/em>, <em>Offside<\/em>, <em>Bamako<\/em>, <em>Ten Canoes<\/em>, <em>Screwfly Solution<\/em> &#8211; a whole alternate top-ten here.<\/p>\n<p>Watched even later: <em>Manufactured Landscapes<\/em>, <em>The Brand Upon the Brain<\/em>, <em>Coeurs<\/em>, <em>Bug<\/em>, <em>Opera Jawa<\/em>, <em>Big Bang Love<\/em>, <em>Exiled<\/em>, <em>Syndromes and a Century<\/em>, <em>Inland Empire<\/em>, <em>Colossal Youth<\/em>, <em>Election 2<\/em>, and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/17189\">Deja Vu<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/blackbook2.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Oh shoot, it turns out I&#8217;ve already <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3913\">done this before<\/a>, reassessing 2006 movies based on their awards-qualifying release dates instead of their real dates &#8211; a silly enterprise since I&#8217;m not an awards voter &#8211; with a sort of must-see list at the bottom.  What would I add to that now&#8230; <em>Half Moon<\/em>, <em>Woman on the Beach<\/em>, <em>La-Bas<\/em>, <em>Blood Tea and Red String<\/em>&#8230; the Holy Modal Rounders doc&#8230; <em>The Guatemalan Handshake<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>What were we talking about?  Oh, <em>Babygirl<\/em>, I came back and watched the last 15 minutes a couple weeks later, got to see Harris fight Antonio.
