{"id":17978,"date":"2025-10-05T20:00:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T00:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=17978"},"modified":"2025-10-05T10:27:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T14:27:56","slug":"hardware-1990-richard-stanley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/17978","title":{"rendered":"Hardware (1990, Richard Stanley)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is clever in its visual transitions and I like the early bits of the soundtrack composed of chill slide guitar (and Iggy Pop as a wacky DJ), but ultimately feels like a cool robot design with a movie loosely hung around it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/hardware4.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Dylan McDermott (also of future-robot movie <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9999\">Automata<\/a><\/em>) and his sidekick Shades (of Jarman&#8217;s <em>Edward II<\/em>) bring the scavenged head of a self-healing military attack robot to Dylan&#8217;s off-again girlfriend Jill (<em>Phantasm II<\/em>).  She puts on some Ministry before integrating the head into one of her artworks (Spielberg would use the same band to convey dystopian junkyard aesthetics a decade later).<\/p>\n<p><em>Three guesses which one is Shades:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/hardware3.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately the robot was built as part of a government program to kill all the humans, and it reactivates to complete its mission.  First it lets the girl&#8217;s creeper neighbor (Wm Hootkins of <em>Death Machine<\/em>) make a slow fool of himself before it megakills him.  Jill lowers her body heat to undetectable levels by jumping into an open-door fridge for five seconds, then they throw the robot in the shower and it does the whole &#8220;I&#8217;m melting&#8221; bit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/hardware2.jpeg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is clever in its visual transitions and I like the early bits of the soundtrack composed of chill slide guitar (and Iggy Pop as a wacky DJ), but ultimately feels like a cool robot design with a movie loosely hung around it.
