{"id":18082,"date":"2025-10-30T20:00:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T00:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=18082"},"modified":"2025-10-29T20:07:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T00:07:02","slug":"the-haunted-palace-1963-roger-corman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/18082","title":{"rendered":"The Haunted Palace (1963, Roger Corman)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;One becomes accustomed to the darkness here.&#8221;  Another year, another lovely Corman\/Price\/Poe movie, this one with some Lovecraft mixed in.  <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/15973\">The Raven<\/a><\/em> came out in January, <em>The Terror<\/em> in June, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/528\">X<\/a><\/em> in July, and this in August &#8211; Corman was a powerhouse in &#8217;63.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/palace3.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Vince prepares the waffle iron:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/palace2.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>110 years after Vince got burned as a witch, his descendant (also Vince) comes looking for his haunted palace inheritance, along with his useless woman Debra Paget (of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11489\">Tales of Terror<\/a><\/em>, Lang&#8217;s <em>Indian Tomb<\/em> star).  They find Lon &#8220;<a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/16940\">The Wolf Man<\/a>&#8221; Chaney claiming to be the caretaker, but he&#8217;s standing in the dark and has cleared out none of the cobwebs.<\/p>\n<p><em>Elisha debuts his famous wide-eyed stare:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/palace1.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Possessed Vince with Lon and their bald friend:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/palace4.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Ancient Vince had possessed the Necronomicon (this is a good movie to watch right after <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/18052\">The Ninth Gate<\/a><\/em>) and his vengeful spirit still lives in the basement.  With Chaney&#8217;s assistance he possesses Current Vince and summons hellfire against his enemies&#8217; families who all still live in town &#8211; first Leo Gordon (villain of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11855\">Riot in Cell Block 11<\/a><\/em>) then the great Elisha Cook Jr. (in his first of many demonic and scary-house movies).  The only normal guy who advocates against revenge and mob violence is Dr. Frank Maxwell (also the only normal person in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/15297\">The Intruder<\/a><\/em>), but you can&#8217;t stop mob violence &#8211; at least the townspeople pause outside the castle to call Vince&#8217;s name a couple times before they charge in and set the place on fire.<\/p>\n<p><em>How people in New England say &#8220;let&#8217;s do this&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/palace6.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/palace7.jpeg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;One becomes accustomed to the darkness here.&#8221; Another year, another lovely Corman\/Price\/Poe movie, this one with some Lovecraft mixed in.
