{"id":18269,"date":"2025-12-26T20:00:49","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T01:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=18269"},"modified":"2025-12-24T16:20:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T21:20:02","slug":"dreams-that-money-can-buy-1947-hans-richter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/18269","title":{"rendered":"Dreams That Money Can Buy (1947, Hans Richter)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Occasionally returning to the Vogel book &#8211; after the Nazi section I skipped, a &#8220;Secrets and Revelations&#8221; round-up of bonus films closes part two &#8220;The Subversion of Content.&#8221;  This is what got me watching <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/18179\">Salesman<\/a><\/em> (&#8220;an inevitable indictment of the commercialization of religion&#8221;) and now this and <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/18270\">the Herzog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/dreamoney1.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Different episodes corresponding to customers of a dream consultant.  Restrained surrealism, attempts at dream logic, but the look and voices and pace are all off.  I don&#8217;t think Americans in the 1940s were able to do dreaminess, with <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/11326\">one big exception<\/a>.  Vogel calls it &#8220;ambitious,&#8221; and at least it&#8217;s that.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image25\/dreamoney2.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>All dialogue dubbed, or rather narrated.  Framing story of man-without-qualities Joe who opens a dream consulting business as an excuse to cram together dream imagery in a style I&#8217;d call Shabby Cocteau. Also full of poetry, but the basic kind that keeps rhyming art with heart. One episode is just spirograph animations.  Four-ish minutes are devoted to shots of a mobile.
