Jan Nowicki (<em>Barrier<\/em>) goes to a time-warping hospital to find his not-dead-yet dad, then wanders through fantastical episodes, full of delirious clutter (and copious cobwebs) in the tradition of Szulkin and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9276\">Hard to be a God<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image26\/hourglass1.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Opens with our guy getting directions from a blind train conductor, ends with him having become the conductor &#8211; I guess it all makes sense if you&#8217;d read the Bruno Schulz novel, or else making sense isn&#8217;t the point.  I wasn&#8217;t expecting a musical number, but he visits the Jewish neighborhood and they can&#8217;t help themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image26\/hourglass2.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>Smart guys like <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/jakepcole\/film\/the-hourglass-sanatorium\/\">Jake<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/comrade_yui\/film\/the-hourglass-sanatorium\/\">Yui<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/pd187\/film\/the-hourglass-sanatorium\/\">PD<\/a> got it, I&#8217;m more on <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/paulduane\/film\/the-hourglass-sanatorium\/\">Paul<\/a>&#8216;s side.<\/p>\n<p><em>Helmeted protag with his dead father and carnival birdheads:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image26\/hourglass3.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image26\/hourglass4.jpeg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After Saragossa Manuscript, another Wojciech Has movie full of madness, beautifully filmed, and based on an eccentric novel, which didn&#8217;t really work for me.
