But Sam just told me that his late movies, like this one, have little in common with the early batch.  So maybe my efforts are misdirected, but whatever the case, I enjoyed this one.<\/p>\n<p>Lab rat Sandrine Bonnaire (Rivette&#8217;s <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3055\">Joan of Arc<\/a><\/em>, also starred in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8440\">Vagabond<\/a><\/em>, <em>East\/West<\/em>, <em>Intimate Strangers<\/em>, and Chabrol&#8217;s <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/4944\">The Ceremony<\/a><\/em>) hears from her brother Paul (Gr\u00e9goire Colin, young star of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/4155\">The Intruder<\/a><\/em> and <em>Dreamlife of Angels<\/em>) that old family friend Walser (Jerzy Radziwilowicz: Rivette&#8217;s <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/482\">Julien<\/a>, Godard&#8217;s director in <em>Passion<\/em>, star of <em>Man of Iron<\/em> and <em>Man of Marble<\/em>) may have killed their father.<\/p>\n<p><em>it all starts with a photo:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/images\/secretdefense6.jpg\" alt=\"image missing\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>angry brother:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/images\/secretdefense3.jpg\" alt=\"image missing\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rounding out a star-studded cast is their mom Francoise Fabian (of <em>5&#215;2<\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/157\">Belle de Jour<\/a><\/em>, and the title role in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/521\">My Night at Maud&#8217;s<\/a><\/em>) and Walser&#8217;s girlfriend Laure Marsac (of nothing in particular).<\/p>\n<p>Sandrine confronts Walser and accidentally kills the girlfriend.  Later, the gf&#8217;s twin sister (also Laure Marsac) shows up.  Everyone is sleeping with Walser except for the brother, who&#8217;s still all hopping mad.  Eventually the twin sister accidentally kills Sandrine (both deaths were caused by someone jumping in front of Walser).<\/p>\n<p><em>dig the mobile:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/images\/secretdefense5.jpg\" alt=\"image missing\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>dig the sexy girl:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/images\/secretdefense2.jpg\" alt=\"image missing\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Movie is usually captivating, but every time Sandrine rides the train in the first half, it shows us the entire train ride.  Goes beyond &#8220;setting the mood&#8221; and starts to get boring.  Much improved in the second half (unlike most movies).
