Visually distinctive films that became instant all-time faves included <em>Mulholland Drive<\/em>, <em>Pulse<\/em>, <em>The Royal Tenenbaums<\/em>, <em>Artificial Intelligence<\/em>, <em>Monsters Inc.<\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/344\">Donnie Darko<\/a><\/em>, <em>Winged Migration<\/em>, and <em>Amelie<\/em>.  I&#8217;d caught up with Jeunet&#8217;s previous features on video (including the brilliant <em>Alien Resurrection<\/em>), always impressed by the atmospheric fantasy worlds, rube goldberg devices, intensely detailed production design, playful editing, cartoon camera angles and rubber-faced Dominique Pinon.  With <em>Amelie<\/em>, he took his fantasy visions and hurled them into the present-day real world, creating a romance flick that keeps forgetting to be romantic because it (like the protagonist) is too easily distracted by everyday wonders.<\/p>\n<p><em>July 2009:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/image09\/amelie3.jpg\" alt=\"image\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/image09\/amelie1.jpg\" alt=\"image\"><\/p>\n<p>The cigarette-counter lady in Amelie played a lead in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/484\">Not On The Lips<\/a><\/em>.  She did look awfully familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Our narrator was the VHS-watching realtor in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/415\">Hearts\/Private Fears<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And holy crap, Katy knew just from the trailer that the veggie-stand guy starred in <em>Angel-A<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/image09\/amelie2.jpg\" alt=\"image\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/image09\/amelie4.jpg\" alt=\"image\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June 2014: From a year when I was watching more movies than ever, and starting to get obsessed with my favorite filmmakers.
