{"id":6814,"date":"2011-10-21T18:30:43","date_gmt":"2011-10-21T22:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=6814"},"modified":"2015-10-02T14:20:36","modified_gmt":"2015-10-02T19:20:36","slug":"memories-of-murder-2003-bong-joon-ho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/6814","title":{"rendered":"Memories of Murder (2003, Bong Joon-ho)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Has a lot in common with <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/259\">Zodiac<\/a><\/em> &#8211; investigations into a never-solved serial murder case, which gradually wears upon the investigator until he&#8217;s acting more like a suspect than a detective.<\/p>\n<p>Our main local detective is played by Kang-ho Song, star of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/236\">The Host<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3147\">Thirst<\/a><\/em>.  His local partner is Roe-ha Kim (<em>A Bittersweet Life<\/em>).  They&#8217;re joined by a city detective from Seoul, Sang-kyung Kim (<em>Hahaha<\/em>, <em>Tale of Cinema<\/em>), don&#8217;t even hide their witness-bullying and evidence-planting from him, and eventually they pull him down to their level.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a period piece, set in the 1980&#8217;s, punctuated by air raid drills (in case of attack from North Korea) and footage of demonstrations throughout the country.  Very well-made movie, if super-depressing by the end.<\/p>\n<p>The Times:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finally and without fanfare, though, it becomes impossible not to see these impotent and crushingly overwhelmed public servants as victims of a kind.
