2. Three Crowns of the Sailor<\/a><\/em> (1983, Raoul Ruiz)<\/strong>
\n3. Two by Manoel de Oliveira: Inquietude<\/a><\/em> (1998) and Non, or the Vainglory of Command<\/a><\/em> (1990)<\/strong>
\nRuiz and Oliveira continually outdo each other, depending whose films I’ve watched more recently.<\/p>\n

4. Alain Resnais double-feature: Smoking\/No Smoking<\/a><\/em> (1993)<\/strong>
\nOr maybe it’s a single feature – either way.<\/p>\n

5. World on a Wire<\/a><\/em> (1973, Rainer Fassbinder)<\/strong><\/p>\n

6. Apocalpyse double-feature: Take Shelter<\/a><\/em> (2011, Jeff Nichols) and Last Night<\/a><\/em> (1998, Don McKellar)<\/strong>
\nBoth are haunting end-of-the-world movies, but Last Night<\/em> is so much less depressing.<\/p>\n

7. Dogtooth<\/a><\/em> (2009, Giorgos Lanthimos)<\/strong>
\n8. Lisztomania<\/a><\/em> (1975, Ken Russell)<\/strong><\/p>\n

9. Nights of Cabiria<\/a><\/em> (1957, Federico Fellini)<\/strong>
\n10. Saga of Anatahan<\/a><\/em> (1954, Josef von Sternberg)<\/strong><\/p>\n

11. World’s Greatest Dad<\/a><\/em> (2009, Bobcat Goldthwait)<\/strong>
\n12. Nouvelle Vague<\/a><\/em> (1990, Jean-Luc Godard)<\/strong>
\nCurrently my favorite Godard movie ever – will see how that opinion holds up.<\/p>\n

13. Japanese Summer: Double Suicide<\/a><\/em> (1967, Nagisa Oshima)<\/strong>
\n14. Daisies<\/a><\/em> (1966, Vera Chytilov\u00e1)<\/strong>
\n15. The Lady Vanishes<\/a><\/em> (1938, Alfred Hitchcock)<\/strong>
\nI cringe to see this at the bottom of my own list since it’s so good<\/em>, but it was a great year.<\/p>\n

Also great: The Scarlet Empress<\/a><\/em>, Symbol<\/a><\/em>, Black Sun<\/a><\/em>, Earth<\/a><\/em>, Tiny Furniture<\/a><\/em>, Super<\/a><\/em>, Walkabout<\/a><\/em> and Metropolitan<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
