Two by Manoel de Oliveira: <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7779\">Inquietude<\/a><\/em> (1998) and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7675\">Non, or the Vainglory of Command<\/a><\/em> (1990)<\/strong><br \/>\nRuiz and Oliveira continually outdo each other, depending whose films I&#8217;ve watched more recently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Alain Resnais double-feature: <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7750\">Smoking\/No Smoking<\/a><\/em> (1993)<\/strong><br \/>\nOr maybe it&#8217;s a single feature &#8211; either way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7989\">World on a Wire<\/a><\/em> (1973, Rainer Fassbinder)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Apocalpyse double-feature: <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7463\">Take Shelter<\/a><\/em> (2011, Jeff Nichols) and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7936\">Last Night<\/a><\/em> (1998, Don McKellar)<\/strong><br \/>\nBoth are haunting end-of-the-world movies, but <em>Last Night<\/em> is so much less depressing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8147\">Dogtooth<\/a><\/em> (2009, Giorgos Lanthimos)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>8. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7994\">Lisztomania<\/a><\/em> (1975, Ken Russell)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8106\">Nights of Cabiria<\/a><\/em> (1957, Federico Fellini)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>10. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7632\">Saga of Anatahan<\/a><\/em> (1954, Josef von Sternberg)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8143\">World&#8217;s Greatest Dad<\/a><\/em> (2009, Bobcat Goldthwait)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>12. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7839\">Nouvelle Vague<\/a><\/em> (1990, Jean-Luc Godard)<\/strong><br \/>\nCurrently my favorite Godard movie ever &#8211; will see how that opinion holds up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7327\">Japanese Summer: Double Suicide<\/a><\/em> (1967, Nagisa Oshima)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>14. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8141\">Daisies<\/a><\/em> (1966, Vera Chytilov\u00e1)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>15. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8270\">The Lady Vanishes<\/a><\/em> (1938, Alfred Hitchcock)<\/strong><br \/>\nI cringe to see this at the bottom of my own list since it&#8217;s <em>so good<\/em>, but it was a great year.<\/p>\n<p>Also great: <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7301\">The Scarlet Empress<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7264\">Symbol<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7296\">Black Sun<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7353\">Earth<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7462\">Tiny Furniture<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7467\">Super<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7522\">Walkabout<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8337\">Metropolitan<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
