Four by Ingmar Bergman<\/strong><br \/>\nI watched <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9049\">Winter Light<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9167\">The Silence<\/a><\/em>, then moved forward to <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9227\">Autumn Sonata<\/a><\/em> and back to <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9537\">The Seventh Seal<\/a><\/em>, also checking out <a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9167\">a documentary<\/a> about Bergman.  Spacing these out every few months ensured that his cinema was always on my mind this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Roman Polanski&#8217;s apartment trilogy<\/strong>: <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9423\">Repulsion<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9424\">Rosemary&#8217;s Baby<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9376\">The Tenant<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nTook the opposite approach of the Bergmans, watching all these in one month.  Whether this was intended as a trilogy or not, they&#8217;re all really interesting together, and each is terrific on its own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9560\">Valerie and Her Week of Wonders<\/a><\/em> (Jaromil Jires)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9161\">Yoyo<\/a><\/em> (Pierre Etaix)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9378\">Possession<\/a><\/em> (Andrzej Zulawski)<\/strong><br \/>\nThis had similarities to <em>The Tenant<\/em>, and both Zulawski and Polanski worked with Wajda.  It was a good year for movies by Polish directors with hidden connections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9199\">House of Tolerance<\/a><\/em> (Bertrand Bonello)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9301\">Kanal<\/a><\/em> (Andrzej Wajda)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9308\">Deseret<\/a><\/em> (James Benning)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9169\">Red Desert<\/a><\/em> (Michelangelo Antonioni)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9228\">A Foreign Affair<\/a><\/em> (Billy Wilder)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9059\">D&#8217;est<\/a><\/em> (Chantal Akerman)<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is a weird thing to watch this on a laptop in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9070\">Spectre<\/a><\/em> (Jacques Rivette)<\/strong><br \/>\nI think watching this at home with interruptions, versus seeing <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/229\">Out 1<\/a><\/em> in theaters, was detrimental to the experience. Watching it felt more like an academic exercise than an immersive feature film.  That might be the reason why I didn&#8217;t know what to do with <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/7122\">L&#8217;Amour Fou<\/a><\/em> a few years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
