{"id":9812,"date":"2015-03-26T20:00:09","date_gmt":"2015-03-27T01:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/?p=9812"},"modified":"2015-03-26T13:57:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T18:57:00","slug":"animated-oscar-shorts-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deeperintomovies.net\/journal\/archives\/9812","title":{"rendered":"Animated Oscar Shorts 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oh no, I got behind on the blog and didn&#8217;t write about these.<br \/>\nI tend to forget shorts pretty fast, so I&#8217;m using web sources to recall which of these was which.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Me and My Moulton<\/em> (Torill Kove)<\/strong><br \/>\nNarrated memoir of three girls growing up in a normal town with not-normal parents &#8211; they are art and design obsessed, and when the kids ask for bicycles they finally get a weird one the proud parents have mail-ordered.  Kove won best picture in 2006 for <em>The Danish Poet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-moulton.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Feast<\/em> (Patrick Osborne)<\/strong><br \/>\nWe saw this before, playing with <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9592\">Big Hero 6<\/a><\/em>, and I forgot to mention it then.  Dog&#8217;s-eye-view of food, food, doomed human relationship, more food.  Osborne worked on <em>Bolt<\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/5470\">Tangled<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/8232\">Wreck-It Ralph<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-feast.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Bigger Picture<\/em> (Daisy Jacobs)<\/strong><br \/>\nOne of my favorite things: wall drawings and real objects interacting, 2D and 3D blending, like the drawn animations on paper-mache backgrounds in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9791\">Rocks In My Pockets<\/a><\/em>, or in a different sense, the dimension-based drama of <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9127\">Rabbit and Deer<\/a><\/em>.  But while I love the idea, it&#8217;s still a drab little story about fighting siblings and a dying parent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-picture.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A Single Life<\/em> (Blaauw\/Oprins\/Roggeveen)<\/strong><br \/>\nMy favorite &#8211; also the shortest.  Woman puts a 45 on the player, and finds that if she skips to different parts of the record, she travels to different times in her own life.  IMDB claims the story was conceived on a drunken college night.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-single.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Dam Keeper<\/em> (Kondo &#038; Tsutsumi)<\/strong><br \/>\nLonely pig runs the windmill that keeps the darkness at bay, but nobody in town loves or respects him so one day he lets the darkness in.  Both directors worked on Pixar movies.  This was cool, dark and imaginative, so naturally there&#8217;s talk of sequels and franchises and live-action remakes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-dam.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sweet Cocoon<\/em> (Bernard\/Bruget\/Duret\/Marco\/Puiraveau)<\/strong><br \/>\nA student film, I think.  A caterpillar is fat!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-cocoon.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Duet<\/em> (Glen Keane)<\/strong><br \/>\nKeane has been in animation forever, was a lead character animator on many Disney features, and this is his first solo film.  A boy is sporty, and a girl is graceful, and they like each other, all in one continual, fluid animation.  Katy thought it reinforced oppressive gender roles, but that was before she saw the new <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/9832\">Cinderella<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-duet.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Footprints<\/em> (Bill Plympton)<\/strong><br \/>\nMoebius-strip footprint-following detective story.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-foot.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Bus Story<\/em> (Tali)<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother memoir, this time of a young woman who dreams of being a bus driver, so rents a shitty bus from its grumpy owner.  Tali made <em>La Pirouette<\/em>, which I saw in 2002 and liked, though I can&#8217;t remember at all.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/oscars-bus.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh no, I got behind on the blog and didn&#8217;t write about these.
