Movie plays it totally straight &#8211; so straight that there aren&#8217;t enough jokes for my liking, just an extended spot-on impression of a <em>Rambo<\/em> sequel with pauses for gay jokes and talking about butts.  Disappointed that The Dissolve suggested this.<\/p>\n<p><em>Most of MacGruber&#8217;s plans involve disguising friends as himself:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/macgruber1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Will Forte (Jenna&#8217;s cross-dressing lover Paul in <em>30 Rock<\/em>), assisted by Ryan Phillippe (last seen in <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/204\">Flags of Our Fathers<\/a><\/em>) and Kristin Wiig (<em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3335\">Whip It<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/306\">Knocked Up<\/a><\/em>), who was the only person I thought managed to be funny.  Baddie Val Kilmer (the year after <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/3763\">Bad Lieutenant 2<\/a><\/em>) definitely has the ability to play a fun villain &#8211; look at his <em><a href=\"\/journal\/archives\/1489\">Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang<\/a><\/em> performance &#8211; but again, the movie wants him to downplay the comedy.  Directed by Booth Jonathan from <em>Girls<\/em>, aka part of The Lonely Island.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If you change your mind&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/macgruber2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>I did enjoy the part where MacGruber has sex with the ghost of Maya Rudolph, at least.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/journal\/image15\/macgruber3.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spoof of bad action movies (all of which I&#8217;ve seen) and of Macgyver &#8211; the twist being that the hero has no actual skills (turns out he&#8217;s good at ripping baddies throats out).
